Drugs for Money & LOTS of it

Mom saw Dr. Dy today. He said her lungs sounded really good. However, she lost 5 pounds and her red blood cell count (RBC) dropped to 8.9 (it should be around a 12.0). She got a shot today to boost her RBC. She has to go back next week for a follow-up on her RBC. If it drops to 8.0, she cannot continue on her current chemo and she will have to have a blood transfusion.

Dr. Dy just came back from a conference on the chemo that he wants mom to take that is not yet approved by the federal government for lung cancer patients. There were over 35,000 medical doctors in attendance at this conference all pushing for its approval. Apparently the economists don’t want it released due its costs. Dr. Dy told mom today that if she took this chemo for a year, it would cost over $300,000. That does not include the doctor fees, blood work, any additional medicines needed, CT scans, or anything else. Dr. Dy is hopeful that the chemo will be approved in the next few months.

Mom has started working 4 hour days. She plans to work her current schedule for the next few months and then will go on full disability. She has a lot of back pain that makes it difficult for her to work.

We are still holding on a trip to Houston to see how she reacts to her current chemo and to see if this new chemo is approved.

My mom sees Dr. Wade in the same office as Dr. Dy. They are a great group there. My mom had to wait on a few experimental drugs as well. I will continue to pray for all of you!

We will keep on praying for your momma! :-) I also pray that this new chemo is approved... and the price drops!
Lisa A. is in Houston, now. I'm hoping they find a cure for her cancer there.
